‘Stanford’ sees the coming together of Puppy38 (Hirioshimabend, Opiumdenpluto) and Alan Rider (Stress, Attrition, Dance Naked, Mummies & Madmen, Adventures in Reality) as Senestra to recreate in sound the experience of the now notorious Stanford Prison Experiment that saw Californian college students transform into sadistic and brutal ‘prison guards’ or cowed and submissive ‘prisoners’ over the course of just six days in August 1971.
Utilising an arsenal of vintage analogue equipment, coupled with modern production techniques, ‘Stanford’ takes us through those six days from the very start to its premature end. As its young subjects became increasingly traumatised and deranged day-by-day, the sense of fear and dread builds steadily from the percussive opening track throughout to the final ominous and brutal analogue-driven finale. Combining elements of classic horror film soundtracks, power electronics, and raw, improvised sounds and samples, ‘Stanford’ is the definitive aural statement of what took place in the basement of California’s Stanford University Psychology facility that fateful week.
Although now widely regarded as deeply unethical, along with other contemporary psychological experiments of the time such as Milgram, the six days of the Stanford Prison Experiment nonetheless offers chilling proof of how rapidly humans can descent into the darkest of states, both as oppressor and oppressed.
The music on this record is inspired by the experience of all those who took part.
Joint release on Adventures in Reality/Fourth Dimension/Opiumdenpulto. Available as this CD with booklet and sticker, and a Special Limited Edition CD (25 copies only) shipped in a 3D ‘prison cell’ outer case with metal bars and sticker.
